Home Learning During Pandemic

Home Learning During Pandemic

Early March 2020, the government announced preventative measures such as events and meetings with more than 100 people were forbidden and all Indonesia universities suspended physical teaching. Being a college student during the global COVID-19 pandemic means allowing many college students like me to return home and adjust to studying from our home. The online class is something new for me, that’s why I’m so excited, but at the same time online class was confusing to adjust to as we had not been prepared through simulations or practices beforehand. I have to adapt to learning using an online class platform like Zoom and Gmeet. The first month was fun, it’s felt like I got a long holiday. I’m happy, no need to wake up early to attend class, no need shower in the morning, I just need open my laptop and click the class’s link and more flexible because I can listen to the lessons on everywhere.

I thought this online class wouldn’t last long, but it turned out I was wrong, been a year and don't know when it will end. I’m getting more bored by the day. Studying from home is a blessing and a curse, you can be very comfortable at home, but sometimes it can be exhausting to sit in front of a computer screen and, quite frankly, demotivating to get any work done. Honestly, during this online class my time management and study plan was very messy. Compared with normal classes, online learning is less effective to me. In class, I can approach the lecturer at any time if I have questions, and I can also discuss with my classmates. During online class I can discuss with my classmates too, but the feels are different, boring and uninspired. Normal classes may have been difficult, but having friends makes it so much more manageable and less stressful. Online classes take out the benefits of having friends to socialize with and being stuck alone with nothing but assignments. I felt stressed, because I wouldn't be able to see my friends, and because it's harder to learn when you don't have your lecture in front of you. Maybe at the first I felt excited, but now the feelings that come to mind are frustration and tension, but I have to overcome them. How I deal with this struggle is I made my study plan, communicate with my friends to reduce my stress and the last giving myself a reward. Self reward is imperative and necessary to keep the motivation active.

Online class, maybe can be fun. One of the most critical elements in making education enjoyable is the variety of activities and information. If the lessons keep following the same pattern every day, they will eventually bore. Playing game about the topic what our lesson, it’s made us more excited and having breaks between lessons can get our focus back. When the lecturer can be a friend to us and not rigid in teaching, makes it easier for us to understand the lessons. Online class is definitely boring, but I really hope we can make it through this safely and return to how things used to be.
